Climbing offers a challenge to both the body and the mind and gives a chance to develop personal strength and balance as well as problem solving skills in a new and unique dimension. It is also a great opportunity to make new friends with a similar passion. The social element of climbing is often overlooked but is a key part to what makes climbing such a great sport.
As a club, we frequently compete at competitions around the North, including NUBS and BUCS, as well as the yearly varsity competition against our rival university Huddersfield. Climbing competitions are a brilliant experience regardless of your ability and are a good chance to flex your competetive side.
Training sessions are twice weekly, both at the Unique Gym and The Hub for Climbing in Bradford. You must have a membership to attend! Sessions are:
- Mondays 18:30 - 21:00, Leaving from Unique at 18:30, we will walk to the Hub to utilise their walls for the session. Sessions are sadly limited to 15 people per week and cost an additional £2.70 per session, but this is incredible value for the climbing available to us during these sessions. Please follow this link to book a space: https://bradford.native.fm/event/climbing-external-venue/91945
- Thursdays 19:00 - 21:00, Taking place on campus at the Unique Gym, these sessions are a great way to learn the skills on our own wall and develop your skills. In this more social based session, come and go as you please, with no fixed time to arrive or leave.
At the Unique Gym, we have a bouldering wall which is the ideal place to start learning but is also perfect for more advanced climbers looking to endurance train or try a new dynamic move. We have a top rope and lead rope that are still easily accessible to novice climbers and offer the opportunity for experienced climbers to stretch their legs on the more difficult routes. The bouldering wall is reset infrequently, allowing for projecting of routes, but this year we are hoping to keep things fresh with more frequent resetting on the smaller of the two boulder wall faces.
Climing can be dangerous - We recomend that you watch the following video as a very rough guide to some of the safety precautions. Bouldering Safety Video
(Not all of the rules in the video are relevant but are still good for a basic understanding). There will always be an experienced climbing executive who is friendly and more than willing to show you the ropes! For complete beginners, we typically start the first session with a walk around the wall running through the safety rules. If in doubt, always ask!
