University of Bradford Union PakSoc was founded in the academic year 2014-2015 when a group of international Pakistani Students realised that Bradford- a densely populated Pakistani area and its locality did not have a platform to channel their inner Pakistanis and therefore this society was founded. PakSoc started with a bang, having approximately sixty people attending its first 'Meet n Greet'
PacSoc is now one of the biggest societies at Bradford finishing the previous acadmic year with almost 200 members. Additionally, PakSoc went on to win the ‘Best New Society’ of the year 2014- 2015 and its President won the SF President’s award for dedicated commitment to the cause at the Colours Ball 2015.
PakSoc has since held a large number of events which catered to both the international Pakistanis as well as the British Pakistanis who felt disconnected to their roots such as the Bhangra Night which saw DJs from BBC Asian Network come to campus, My Roots and also Rang 16 which got awarded the Event of the Year at Activities Ball 16.
One of the objectives of this society is to clear the misconception of Pakistan’s image which had been created by a delusional media, therefore, urging people from other ethnicities to join the society in order to learn about the rich heritage and culture of Pakistan made us have a high amount of international students such as Koreans, Russians and Africans join the society and events such as a candle vigil for the Peshawar Massacre in December 2014 and also 2015 were held with the help of the UBU.
Furthermore, this society has provided a platform for the students at the university to engage with the Union itself and make a good healthy relationship with the Union Staff. An example of this can be that the last two sabbatical teams of the Students Union have had at least one of its members being elected from the PakSoc exec team. The Activities Officer of 2015- 2016 and the Union Affairs Officer of 2016- 2017 have been both PakSoc execs in the past.
This article still might not be the full picture of what PakSoc has achieved over the past few years. There will be a few photos attached that might give you a good idea of what PakSoc has been doing over the year. We would love to see you all come to University of Bradford, be involved in the Students Union and also be integral members of PakSoc and we will welcome you with open arms.
