Welcome to the 2022-2023 rendition of the Peace Society!
The Peace Society is a space for all to come together and work towards spreading the message of peace. As peace is a heavily contested definition we have no clear structure on which direction we travel in, it is up to our members to dictate what they would like to do, and we as executives do our best to facilitate these ideas. For example in 2019 our members organised themselves into operation groups where they would plan and develop events for the society to run. One such group organised an art workshop where participants would fill a matchbox with something they created, such as a poem, and then the matchboxes were auctioned off to chairty.
The Peace Society is not bound to the university, in the past we have partook in activities around the city centre such as a community story telling event "10x9" where nine storytellers have 10 minutes to tell a story surrounding a certain theme. Members are greatly encouraged to recommend peaceful events happening around the area so that we can all attend.
In addition to this, the Peace Society is also responsible for co-organising the Tolstoy Cup. With members from the Society representing the Bradford Peace Studies Department and participating in the annual football match against the King's College War Studies Department. Sports and Peace intersect and football plays a major part of this Society.
Meet your executives!
President: Haroon Khalid.
Hello! I am Haroon. I am an MA student studying Peace, Conflict and Development. I have also done my undergraduate degree here at Bradford, and was Vice-President of the Peace Society in 2019-2020. I have had plenty of experience planning and executing events so I am certain there is something for everyone. Here at the Peace Society we take members wellbeing seriously and check-in and check-out in every meeting/social we have. Peace be with you.
Secretary: Hae-Yoon Kang
:) I am Hae-Yoon Kang, pronounced Hey-you! I am a PHD student who's research topic is on North Korean refugees in the United Kingdom. I completed my MA in Bradford and it was "Advanced Practice in Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution" in 2019 and was also a part of the Peace Society. The executive team at the time awarded me with a "Most Heart Warming Member" award for caring about all members and always providing encouragement. I look forward to meeting you!
